Say hello to James, the bright red number 5 engine on the Island of Sodor! James is a mixed-traffic engine, which means he’s capable of pulling both passenger coaches and freight trains. Versatility is his strength—but he has to admit, he prefers the passenger trains. Why? Because freight can get his shiny red paint a little dirty, and James takes great pride in looking his best.

James’ journey on Sodor hasn’t always been smooth. When he first arrived, he was painted black and equipped with wooden brake blocks, which unfortunately led to a crash. Since then, he’s been sporting his signature bright red color, and he’s not shy about showing it off!

While James’ pride in his appearance can sometimes get him into trouble, it’s also part of what makes him such a memorable and lovable engine. He’s hardworking, versatile, and always ready for adventure—even if he occasionally fusses over his shiny paint.
